New to DVD this week

The King's Speech (Anchor Bay) Did this old-fashioned biopic about the stuttering King George VI deserve the Best Picture Oscar? No. Did Colin Firth as the stammering monarch deserve his award? Definitely. And it's his performance (along with his terrific costars Helene Bonham Carter and Geoffrey Rush) that carries this excellent movie. If it occasionally feels like a remnant of old-school filmmaking, in a way it is. There's nothing revolutionary about The King's Speech. It's great storytelling told by old (and new) pros. Extras include footage of the real King George, so you can compare speech impediments.

Gulliver's Travels (Twentieth Century Fox) – In this modern-day update of Jonathan Swift's classic, Jack Black stumbles into a land of really tiny people and does a bunch of crazy Jack Black-like things. It's kinda pointless and not very funny. Extras include a ton of deleted and extended scenes.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 (Warner) – The penultimate movie in the series feels a bit unfinished, which is to be expected, given the circumstances. But it's still one of the most thrilling outings. The in-depth behind-the-scenes extras, like a peek at Part 2, are a treat for Potterphiles.

Mortal Kombat (New Line) – The 1995 video-game movie, and the follow-up Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, make their Blu-ray debuts. They're not great movies. They're not even pretty-good movies. But they are loads of fun, especially when the ass-kicking reaches the final "finish him!" levels.
