New to DVD this week

Das Boot (Sony)

Wolfgang Petersen's 1981 classic celebrates its 30th anniversary with this Blu-ray debut. And it looks stunning. Set in a German submarine during World War II, Das Boot is, unsurprisingly, one of the most claustrophobic movies ever made. The film's climactic scenes — especially when the U-boat takes some hits — will have you squirming in your seat. Both the theatrical and director's cuts are included; stick with the longer one, which takes time to get to know the men aboard the doomed vessel. Extras include plenty of behind-the-scenes features, as well as a "Captain's Tour" of the cramped sub, just in case you feel like freaking out.

Hobo With a Shotgun (Magnet/Magnolia)

You go into a movie called Hobo With a Shotgun hoping — no, praying — it lives up to its title. And damn if this one doesn't almost pull it off. Rutger Hauer stars as a homeless man who takes care of business with his pump-action firearm. That's pretty much all there is to it.

13 Assassins (Magnet/Magnolia)

The latest movie by Japanese director Takashi Miike — a remake of an old samurai film about a group of hired killers who band together to take down an evil lord — owes a lot to Seven Samurai. But it's bloodier than Kurosawa's classic. Way bloodier.

Trailers From Hell Volume 2 (Shout! Factory)

The 20 movie trailers in this collection range from the kinda well-known (The Hunchback of Notre Dame) to the obscure (Fire Maidens From Outer Space). Fans like Roger Corman and Guillermo Del Toro chime in on their favorites. Cool extra: Corman's The Little Shop of Horrors, in its entirety and widescreen for the first time.
