New to DVD this week

Moneyball (Sony)

It's as much a geeky tech movie as it is a brawny sports movie, and it's one of 2011's best either way. Brad Pitt plays Oakland A's general manager Billy Beane, who's tired of his losing team and sagging ticket sales. So he rebuilds his club through computer analysis, drafting players based on numbers-don't-lie statistics. Adapted by Aaron Sorkin and the guy who wrote Schindler's List from a best-selling non-fiction book, Moneyball bursts with life onscreen. You'd never guess a story about stats could be this exciting. Some of the extras on the Blu-ray and DVD go behind the scenes, showing you how the real Beane reinvented the game.

Boardwalk Empire: The Complete First Season (HBO)

It's time to revisit the first 12 episodes of the Emmy-hogging series about a Prohibition-era politician/gangster ruling Atlantic City. Martin Scorsese directed the premiere episode, but it's terrific throughout. So is Steve Buscemi as the puppeteer calling the shots.

G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero: Series 2, Season 1 (Shout! Factory)

The 24 episodes collected here are pretty good, but it's the five-part lead-off miniseries "Operation Dragonfire" that stands out. The 1990 animated series makes its DVD debut in this four-disc set, which is short on extras but long on heroes with cool-ass names.

What's Your Number? (Twentieth Century Fox)

This slow-moving romantic comedy wastes the usually dependable Anna Faris as a woman who looks back on all of her relationships to see if "the one" got away. Unfunny and filled with shit that people in real life never say or do.
