Homeboy

Lakewood-bred comedian visits from New York.

New York comic Ray DeVito spends Thanksgiving tonight telling jokes in his native Lakewood. And he's bringing along his gag bag, which is stuffed with jokes about the opposite sex. "I read that women are sexually attracted to men's eyes," he quips. "If that's true, thank you, ladies, for picking the one part of our bodies we don't want you to touch."

The 32-year-old comedian moved to the Big Apple in 2003, after fine-tuning his act in local clubs for five years. He now splits his time auditioning for commercials and TV shows and promoting his debut comedy CD, 1647 Waterbury, which is named after DeVito's boyhood home. Still, NYC's comedy circuit is a "wake-up call," he says. "You think you're getting somewhere in Ohio. Then you see what it's like in New York. It's the major leagues compared to being in middle America on a farm team." DeVito says he's logged more than 360,000 miles on his 2000 Cavalier, driving to college campuses and comedy clubs across the country. "You've gotta go on the road to make money," he says. "It's a long road."
