How We Get Fish Sticks

It's hard to get kids interested in outdoor activities these days, says Summit County Metro Parks naturalist Mark Ludwig. "We're dealing with a society that's indoors all the time." Still, the annual Fall Fishing Derby hooks plenty of kids each year. Today's reel extravaganza for kids under 15 takes place at the F.A. Seiberling Nature Realm's pond, which is swimming with bluegill, bass, and catfish. After the catches are thrown back in the pond, awards are handed out for biggest fish, smallest fish, and funniest-looking fish.

Also, experts will hold workshops and demonstrations throughout the day, schooling junior reelers in techniques used to snag the big one. The Metro Parks will provide nightcrawlers, red worms, and maggots, as well as fishing rods for participants who need them.
Sun., Sept. 24, 1-4 p.m.
