In the Hood

Case prof urges authors to think like Realtors while they write.

At tonight's Writer's Showcase, three local authors may sound like real-estate agents, as they give pointers on penning a good book. From Mary Grimm's experience writing about Cleveland, it's all about location, location, location. "I don't just like the pretty parts; I love the industrial Flats," says Grimm, whose debut novel, Left to Themselves, exposes love triangles in small-town Ohio. "My family came to work here in the steel mills, so I wouldn't be here if not for that."Grimm joins fellow wordsmiths Steven Hayward (The Secret Mitzvah of Lucio Burke) and Sarah Willis (Some Things That Stay) to tackle the workshop's "writer-and-place" theme. "I imagine what it could mean to work in the steel mills, to feel connected to it," says Grimm. "I wonder if you feel the same connection if you work at an insurance company." The seminar starts at 6 tonight at Case Western Reserve University's Clark Hall, 11130 Bellflower Road. Admission is free. Call 216-368-8961 or visit
