Iron & Wine

When: Fri., June 27, 8 p.m. 2014
Price: $35
Iron & Wine’s sound has come a long way since the quiet, whispery days of Sam Beam’s first artistic incarnations, yet it still manages to retain its offbeat charm. Released last year, his latest effort Ghost on Ghost reaches for the Simon and Garfunkel-esque roots of the 1960s and ’70s with its folky, singsong beats. Tracks like “Caught in the Briars” and “Grace for Saints and Ramblers” especially embody this with R&B undertones and Beam’s cheery vocals keeping up the pace. “Grass Widows” and “Winter Prayers” take on a decidedly slower gait with Beam’s remorseful sounding lyrics set against a haunting background of drawn-out vocal harmonies and piano utterances. Fans of Beam’s early work may not be so keen on this newer, studio-polished sound, but the sincerity of Iron & Wine’s original sound is still there. (Liz Trenholme)
