It's Complicated

When: Sat., Dec. 28, 1:30 p.m. 2013
The plot of 1951's An American in Paris revolves around the rivalry between Jerry Mulligan (Gene Kelly) and Milo Roberts (Nina Foch). Jerry is an American painter who's just trying to make a name for himself in Paris. Milo agrees to buy his paintings and help him advance but on her conditions, which include that the two have sex. Jerry is reluctant to agree to these terms but continues to see Milo on a business-only basis. Things get complicated when Jerry Mulligan meets Lise Bouvier (Leslie Caron) and falls in love with her. All the characters here are torn between love, something reflected in the tunes that George Gershwin penned for the movie. It screens today at 1:30 at the Cleveland Museum of Art as part of the museum's Gene Kelly film festival. Tickets are $9. (Lisa Hammond)
