Charles Eversole loves the sound of cocktails clinking in a packed nightclub. “The more you drink, the better we sound,” laughs the music director of
A Cabaret Sampler, which opens at Playhouse Square this weekend. The show features local celebrities and Cleveland Cabaret troupers performing sets of torch ballads and tuneful double entendres, accompanied by a trio lead by pianist Eversole. “We sing about what we love to do,” says Eversole. The production adheres to the traditional Berlin-style cabaret format, which combines comedy, song, and dance. “Instead of getting handed a part, the performers get to express themselves,” says Eversole.
Each entertainer takes a turn at the mic for a “Whitman’s Sampler of musical offerings,” says Eversole. Audiences will hear everyone from stage-vet June Lang to Kevin Joseph Kelly, who plays sidekick Jimi Sprinkles on That’s Life With Robin Swoboda. “It truly is a mixed bag,” says Eversole. “You’ll be surprised at how creative it can get.”
