Jewel/Holly Williams

When: Sat., March 23, 7:30 p.m. 2013
Price: $35-$47.50
Singer-songwriter Holly Williams, who’s opening tonight for Jewel, was literally washing dishes when the idea for “Drinkin’,” one of the best songs on her terrific new album The Highway, came to her. “I sat down to grab it real quick and write it,” she says. “After that song I was sure I wanted to move forward with making the record and I felt like I was ready to start down the road again. Sometimes a new song is all you need to jumpstart again.” The daughter of Hank Williams, Jr. and the granddaughter of Hank Williams, Williams has pedigree on her side. And she explores her musical past in detail in several of Highway’s songs. Williams doesn’t think it’s an issue that she straddles the line between pure country and alt-country. “I'm a singer/songwriter who will always try to bring the root and rawness of the song and the emotion of the lyric out,” she says. “Genres are exhausting to me. I love John Prine, Jackson Browne, Patty Griffin, those are the artists I look to for building an amazing career on beautiful simple songs, whatever genre they fit in.” (Jeff Niesel)
