John Mayer/Dawes

When: Wed., Aug. 30, 7 p.m. 2017
Price: $36-$99
After several tours with Dead & Co., where he took on the role of Jerry Garcia in tone and phrasing (though not at all in spirit), John Mayer returns to the world of solo material with his latest album, The Search for Everything. It’s an uptempo record filled with soulful and almost jazzy rhythms that fill out Mayer’s classic lyrics of cheese and longing (“I still keep your shampoo in my shower, in case you want to wash your hair”). But, throughout it all, Mayer’s stuff is pretty fun and danceable; it sounds like a far cry from the “bubblegum tongue” business of the early 2000s. And anyone who spent time with Mayer’s blues output over the years or his time on the road with Bobby will know that the guy’s got chops: Guitar-attuned listeners will catch enjoyable licks from tunes like “The Theme from ‘The Search for Everything’” and elsewhere. Should be a fun show at Blossom tonight, with what we assume will be a more diverse crowd than on past tours. (Eric Sandy)
