A coming-of-age musical set in 1985 South Africa, Kanarie focuses on Johan, an 18-year-old obsessed with Boy George. When Johan faces compulsory military service, he auditions for the Canaries, the South African Defence Force Church Choir and Concert Group. While touring with them, he sees more of the country and gains an understanding of the oppressive nature of apartheid. The movie screens at 8:15 tonight at the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque, where it screens again at 9:25 on Saturday night. Tickets cost $10, or $7 for members, students and students. (Niesel)
