Kelly Osbourne

Shut Up (Epic)

41047.0.jpeg
It could be worse. Shut Up -- the latest product in the Osbourne family's all-media assault on our ears, eyes, and taste -- could be the coming-out party of a future diva. Or a teen dream gone bad. Or even a mess of crashing computers and whispered voices. Instead, Shut Up is a set of guitar-driven neo-punk girl rock with attitude, spunk, and volume.

It's also incredibly calculated, generic, and repetitive. But seeing that the patriarch of the Osbourne brood is a master of these traits, we should expect nothing less from his daughter. Kelly considers herself the rebel of the family (Mom is the shrewd businesswoman, Dad is the quivering legend, brother Jack is the club-hopping dropout). Yet distaff, reheated Blink-182 is nothing compared to biting heads off of bats.

Producer Ric Wake piles on the gloss and hooks, which go a long way in covering up Osbourne's vocal limitations. "Too Much of You" and the title tune almost manage to break the monotony. Still, we'd rather listen to Avril Lavigne.
