Kitty Gordon

With Will Sexton and Jeff Klein. Saturday, May 26, at the Beachland.

When Mark Addison lived in Cleveland in the late '70s and early '80s, he played with a new-wave/bar band called the Generators that could regularly pack the Euclid Tavern and similar venues in town. After that, he played in a band called Nation of One and a host of other local acts, but he soon tired of having to live down the legacy of the Generators. When he moved from Cleveland to L.A. in the early '90s, he didn't leave rock and roll behind -- he just needed a change of scenery. There, he formed a band called the Borrowers, which put out one record on EMI/Capitol in 1996 before parting ways with the label. After that, Addison again sought a change of pace and moved to Austin, Texas, where he built a studio called the Slaughterhouse (funded by maxing out his credit cards) just outside the city. He also started a label called India Records and formed a band called Kitty Gordon with Nina Singh, who had played drums in the Borrowers. This time, however, Singh became the focal point of the band by shifting to guitar and vocals, while Addison took up bass. Originally a duo, Kitty Gordon expanded to a four-piece by adding singer-guitarist-keyboardist Sheridan Roalson and drummer Johny Arredondo for the recording of its full-length debut, Weather. The change suits the band well; songs such as "Enuff" and "Somebody Beautiful" bristle with rich arrangements, as Singh shows off her Sheryl Crow-like delivery. The other artists on the bill include distinctive singer-songwriters Jeff Klein and Will Sexton, both of whom record for India Records. They'll be backed by members of Kitty Gordon.
