There's something to be said for a band that outlasts cyclical trends and even the label it helped put on the map. Take KMFDM, one of the mainstays of the legendary industrial-rock WaxTrax! Records. The label has disintegrated, but like a well-kept automobile, Sascha Konietzko and company have kept on trucking, with the help of a rabid fan base that can never get enough of KMFDM's "ultra-heavy beat."

After a short game of record-label ping-pong, KMFDM has consolidated its efforts on its latest, Hau Ruck (German for "Heave Ho") on Metropolis Records. It's a return to rigid form from start to finish, arguably the band's most cohesive album since 1995's Nihil.

"It's a really diverse record but comes together nicely," says singer Lucia Cifarelli, a quiet, humble person to chat with and a far cry from the über-aggressive vixen listeners encounter on "Free Your Hate" and "Professional Killer." "We made a kick-ass record with the short amount of time we had, and Metropolis gave us the freedom to make the record we wanted to make."

So, what's the band's secret of longevity? For Cifarelli, it's the combination of staying the course despite changing popular tastes and always-eager fans.

"They're just really devoted, and we'll see them bring someone who hasn't heard us before," she says. "When we play live, we see them throw down on the floor, and it fuels us onstage. It's something we don't take for granted."
