Lauren Lanzaretta’s ‘Naked Soul’ Lives Up to Hype

Album Review

Lauren Lanzaretta, Naked Soul

Recently voted "Best Singer" in Scene's Best of Cleveland campaign and a nominee in multiple categories in the recent Ohio Hip Hop Awards, local soul singer Lauren Lanzaretta generated plenty of hype even before releasing her full-length debut. Recorded locally at Lava Room Recording, the debut hits the mark right from the start. Album opener "You Got Me Bad" commences with a soulful croon as Lanzaretta channels Aretha Franklin. On songs such as "Wounded Man" and "Sunday Morning," Lanzaretta is equally adept at mixing up soul, funk and pop. "Stranger's Eyes" is so natural sounding, it comes off as a standard — think "Mustang Sally." Lanzaretta's model-like good looks are bound to get rave reviews, but it's her soulful voice that merits the attention.

Lauren Lanzaretta performs at 9 p.m. on Saturday, June 7, at Mahall's.
