Film and TV star Vanessa Bell Calloway returns to Karamu in this spirited two-act play featuring authentic personal letters from Zora Neale Hurston to close friends such as Langston Hughes and Countee Cullen. Fused with fictional narrative to illuminate her life, her extraordinary career and her contributions to the American literary canon, Calloway brings Hurston’s words to life. Performances of this spicy new play, written by Gabrielle Denise Pena and directed by Anita Dashiell-Sparks, will be held in the newly renovated, Jelliffe Theatre. Calloway stars as Zora in a “spellbounding and magnetic” performance as the Harlem Renaissance poet and author. The performance is 90 minutes with no intermission.
