Literary Launch at Market Garden

Just because Dave Lucas is a poet doesn’t mean he sits around in his smoking jacket sipping brandy. These days his philosophy boils down to five well-chosen words: Literature goes best with beer. If you agree, check out tonight’s launch of the Market Garden Brewery Reading Series, a monthly gathering in a private room at the popular beer garden where local literary types will be afforded a showcase complete with suds. Lucas, one of the series’ organizers, says his goal is to provide an alternative to stuffy readings “that feel like you’re going to church. No long intros, no questions and answers. And after it’s over, we hope people will stick around and buy the authors a beer.” Tonight’s talent includes poet, activist, and creative-writing teacher Philip Metres, winner of a 2010 Cleveland Arts Prize and author of the award-winning abu ghraib arias. He’ll be joined by best-selling author and activist Loung Ung, known for her trio of critically acclaimed memoirs (First They Killed My Father, Lucky Child, and 2012’s Lulu in the Sky) recounting her life inside and out of Cambodia. “We’ve been exceptionally lucky in finding great writers,” says Lucas. “So far no one’s said ‘no.’” The readings begin at 7 p.m. Each author gets about 30 minutes, with a 10-minute beer break in-between. Signing will follow and books will be available for purchase. Otherwise, the only thing that will cost you is the beer. The monthly series is currently booked through October; upcoming local writers include Dan Chaon, George Bilgere, and Thrity Umrigar. See the Market Garden Brewery Facebook page for details.
