Livingston Taylor

Saturday, February 3, at the Kent Stage.

It's not always easy being breezy. Livingston Taylor has carved out his entire music career with his bro's shadow constantly looming overhead. James Taylor can claim six top 25 singles and a greatest-hits album that has sold more than 10 million copies. Yet poor Livingston's biggest hit -- the 1978 soft-rocker "I Will Be in Love With You" -- never hit higher than No. 30. Even a collegiate bout of depression in the late '60s was eclipsed by the fact that Livingston had to check himself into the same hospital where his brother had already been treated for the same ailment.

Oddly enough, one of Livingston's most beloved tunes is "Pajamas," an innocent little ditty from 1980. It's a song he and his wife Maggie eventually reworked into a children's book. Truth is, there's a special sort of feat in resolving the myriad tensions of one's life with airy guitar stylings and banjo twiddling, and Livingston Taylor does this with aplomb -- regardless of who is brother is.
