Local Arts News

Last week, choreographer Ana Dumet opened the doors at La Casa Latina, a place, she says, where artists from the Latino community can think of as a home for their creative endeavors. The organization is housed at St. Coleman's Hall (2001 W. 65th St.) in second-floor rooms set up for dance, art and music, as well as exercise. Dumet says the idea is to follow somewhat in the footsteps of the defunct Escuela Popular, an arts, cultural and education facility that flourished in Tremont in the '90s. Dumet says it will eventually host performances, exhibitions and classes, becoming what the community makes it. For information, e-mail casalatinacleveland@yahoo.com.

All the phrase "NEOEA Day" has ever meant to kids is that they get one Friday off from school in October. For teachers, though, it means they can take a class that will help them in the classroom. This year, the Cleveland Play House offers teachers a full-day workshop demonstrating ways to integrate the performing arts into their curricula - something most arts organizations in the region would be eager to help out with. The workshop (translation for the kids: day off) takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, October 17, at the Cleveland Play House. The cost, $25, includes lunch. Cuyahoga Arts and Culture has announced that new guidelines are available for the publicly funded Project Support grant program. The program funds projects by organizations whose primary purpose is not arts programming, such as concert series hosted by churches. This year, it's a two-step application process, beginning with an obligatory Intent to Apply form and documentation of eligibility, due January 14, 2009. The next step is the actual application and supplemental materials, the deadline for which is February 25, 2009. Forms are available for download at www.cacgrants.org. To clear up any questions, CAC is offering a workshop whose title - Making the Case: The Building Blocks of a Good Project Support Application - pretty much says it all. After an overview of project-support guidelines, eligibility requirements and the application process, there will be panel discussions that offer tips on grant writing, project budgets and more. The seminar is scheduled for November 10. For information, e-mail info@cacgrants.org or call 216.515.8303. - Michael Gill
