Local Band in Focus

Debussi

Meet the Band: Matt Kaz (vocals, piano, guitar), Alex Beck (guitar, violin), Dylan Jones (drums), and Jeff Farmer (guitar and keyboards)

History Lesson: The Painesville band hooked up in college and decided to keep playing together after graduation. After losing two members, they picked up Jones and Farmer last December.

Because Mozart Doesn't Sound Nearly as Cool: Kaz's grandma swears she knew Claude Debussy in a previous life. The woman loves his tunes and cries every time she hears her grandson play the classical composer's music.

Leave Your Snobby Attitude at the Door: Debussi would sound out of place at Severance Hall, but they do throw a little piano into their mix.

Today, Reliable Transportation; Tomorrow, the World: The band recorded a demo, which is available online and at their concerts. They're hoping to start work on their first album in the fall. "We're just recording, getting a van, getting on the road, and eventually taking over the world," says Kaz.

Why They Matter: The piano can be an oddball addition to the band's driving rock sound, but it sounds pretty damn cool.
