Local Band in Focus

Deadbeat Poets

Meet the Band:

Frank Secich (vocals, bass), Terry Hartman (vocals, rhythm guitar), Pete Drivere (vocals, lead guitar), and John Koury (vocals, drums).

Out of the Blue: Secich's '70s power-pop band Blue Ash is held in such high regard by genre enthusiasts that he was asked to contribute to a tribute album for the late Bomp! Records founder (and Ash fan) Greg Shaw. Another Blue Ash admirer, the owner of Pop Detective Records, has released the Deadbeat Poets' three albums.

Friends in Tuneful Places:

Secich (pictured, second from left) rounded up his old pals Drivere and Koury for the Shaw tribute and hasn't looked back. "I liked the way the band sounded so much, and I had just started writing songs again," he recalls. "I thought, If I ever record my own stuff, I'd like to use these guys."

Now Playing on Miami Steve's Radio: The Deadbeat Poets' "The Man With the X-Ray Eyes" was nominated for 2011's Coolest Song in the World on Little Steven's Underground Garage radio show.

Fighting the Winter Blahs:

The Youngstown band released a Christmas EP late last year and recently wrapped up a tour of Europe.

Why You Should Hear Them: Their Nuggets-inspired originals channel the same garage-rock energy that Secich brought to Blue Ash and his work with Stiv Bators; plus, Hartman played in Terry and the Tornados, and Drivere and Koury executed in the Infidels.

Where You Can Hear Them:
