Gabe Schray

Effective Demonic Experiment

(Actual Archives)

Houseguest's Gabe Schray recorded this heady instrumental album, appropriately titled Effective Demonic Experiment, at Akron's Authentic Sound Laboratory. It opens with the undulating "A Young, Dynamic Silhouette," a mellow track that features softly echoing guitar riffs. There's a spaghetti Western feel to "Beyonderer," and the woozy "Stranger Systems" pairs whistling synths with snappy drum beats. The music evokes Moby (the ambient "Prelude (For Phase Distortion Synthesis)" and the smart, inventive Mexico-based DJ outfit, the Nortec Collective. The record is hardly conventional, even by indie-rock standards. But it's so carefully crafted, it can't be dismissed for being too out-there. — Jeff Niesel

The Glory of the Imperfect

This prog-rock/psych/jam band has been kicking around town for 30 years, and it definitely sounds like a blast from the past. With its intricate guitar work and spoken vocals about "the journey," "Rules" recalls Adrian Belew-era King Crimson. Quoting Samuel Taylor Coleridge at the beginning of "Water Water," these guys aspire to match the Moody Blues with their atmospheric music and poetic lyrics. The result isn't quite as refined as the best prog, but the album has its moments. Featuring a guest spot by Mifune's Christine Fader, who adds soulful vocals, the funky "Spring Anticipation" is one of the CD's better tracks, and the loose, freewheelin' "Cemetery (And Some Are Not)" is good fun, particularly when the band stretches out into a groovy jam.

Intra performs at 8 p.m. Friday, April 23, at the Barking Spider (11310 Juniper Rd., 216.421.2863, barkingspidertavern.com). Donation requested.
