Local Indie Rockers the Lost Ways Sound Stellar on ‘Beneath the Stars’

Album Review

The Lost Ways

Beneath the Stars

(self-released)

Formerly of the Revelers and Sleepykid, veteran local singer-guitarist Andrej Cuturic has a keen ear for rootsy indie rock melodies. And this new band featuring bassist Matt Charboneau, drummer Tony Cross and guitarist Nick Cross really clicks here. It's a winning combo. The guys can stretch out and jam — which they do at the conclusion of the Neil Young-like "Where Are We Now" and at the end of "It's All Over Now," all the while keeping the songs concise. Cuturic's raspy vocals distinguish "Lost Your Way," a catchy tune that sounds a bit like the Strokes. "Sweet Nothing (Love is the Engine)" also has a real frenetic energy to it. Recorded and mixed by local singer-songwriter Brian Straw and mastered by veteran local musician Adam Boose, the album has a good, clean sound to it but still retains the band's gritty side.

The Lost Ways perform with Shit Box Jimmy and Little Bighorn at 9 p.m. on Saturday, June 28, at Mahall's.
