Lotus Entertain You

Metalmania gets better with age for Cleveland Heights trio.

A fortysomething metalhead, Todd Shainoff's biological clock hasn't stopped ticking; the Lotus Pedal guitarist simply winds up his internal timepiece before going onstage. Find out for yourself when the band opens for Buffalo's Snotrockets tonight in Tremont. "What's great is that we play all these metal fests. You have all these bands, and they're half our age," says Shainoff, who works as a radiology-department technician at the Cleveland Clinic. "I don't bother with the age, and I don't care what people think as long as I think it's good."Shainoff founded the Cleveland Heights trio in 2002 with drummer Paul Strachan and bassist Jeff Brodsky. To add to their youthful outlook, the bandmates have adopted nicknames to appeal to their Gen-Y fan base. Shainoff is dubbed "Race" for his collection of vintage roadsters, which includes a '68 Camaro. "I've had convertibles and a bunch of fast cars. That is, until gas went up to three dollars a gallon," he says. "Now they sit in a garage." His hobby's escalating costs have helped drive Shainoff and crew back into clubs after spending a year in the studio, where they replenished their set list of original music. Their most-requested tunes include the cosmic "Secret Space Machine," the New Agey "Karma Soldier," and Shainoff's hot-rod-inspired "Girl on a Motorcycle." "We don't get into the super-long songs, where it gets monotonous and overtoned with guitar solos. We cut it down to five minutes max to have more of a crossover appeal And we have hooks to the songs, but they're not clichés," says Shainoff. "The objective is to entertain and kick butt." The doubleheader starts at 9 tonight at Pat's in the Flats, 2233 West Third Street. Admission is $3. Call 216-621-8044 or visit www.patsintheflats.com.
