Lou Barlow

With Earlimart and Alaska. Thursday, November 7, at the Grog Shop.

Critics may think of Lou Barlow as the original indie rock nerd, a tattered-sweater-wearing doofus making love to his four-track after being rejected by the hot cashier at Piggly Wiggly. But with celebrated bands like Sebadoh, Sentridoh, and the Folk Implosion behind him, Louie's left a massive wake of largely home-recorded pop, as largely tossed-off as it is occasionally majestic.

At his height (Sebadoh's Harmacy, the Folk Implosion's One Part Lullaby), no one can match Barlow's lovelorn, raggedy-ass feel for a twilight melody. But he can also throw his four-track and a coupla cats into a full bubble bath and sell the tape to people. Will the soothsayer or the screwball show up for this solo gig? It's anyone's guess, but know this: Louie does a bitchin' version of Foreigner's "Cold as Ice."
