Mad Dog Day Afternoon

A guitar-strumming comedian wastes away at Put-in-Bay.

It's taken Mike "Mad Dog" Adams 30 years to slow down. For the 50-year-old songwriting comedian, that means cutting his performance schedule to 150 shows a year. "It takes a little more out of me each year," says Adams, who earned his nickname in high school because of his fondness for MD 20/20. "I've played and partied hard for most of my life. But the older you get, the tougher it is to shake off the juice from the night before."

Late-night partying won't pose a problem this weekend, when Adams will tell a few jokes and play some Jimmy Buffett-inspired originals at a pair of free afternoon shows at Put-in-Bay. "People come with the right attitude to have a great time," he says. "It's like a little Caribbean up north."

Since the late '70s, Adams has been a summertime fixture at the Roundhouse, where audiences are treated to his mantra: "Every day above ground is a good day."
