Local graphic artist Derek Hess is a man of many talents. Over the course of his lengthy career, the guy has used pen, ink and acrylic to make everything from posters to album covers and paintings. Internalize Conflict Externalize War, his first local show in more than two years, showcases the broad spectrum of his work and includes several of the 8-track tapes he created last year for a show in Los Angeles dubbed 8traction, as well the Playboy magazine covers from the '60s and '70s that he recently repurposed. Additionally, at tonight's opening at smARTspace, Forced Perspective, a documentary about Hess, will have its premiere, and copies of He Ain't No Vargas, a limited-edition collection of Hess drawings, will be for sale. Admission is free and the event runs from 5 to 9 p.m. (Niesel)
