Manchester Orchestra 

With Colour Revolt. Sunday, August 5, at the Lime Spider.

In just two years, Atlanta's Manchester Orchestra has grown from Andy Hull's studio study into a full-blown buzz band, touring nonstop with such bands as Brand New, Saves the Day, and mewithoutyou.

After his songwriting impressed those around him, Hull spent senior year of high school splitting time between the studio and home-schooling. He eventually enlisted some friends' help, discovering he had a band in the process. He released the recordings as an EP, 2005's You Brainstorm, I Brainstorm. But Brilliance Needs a Good Editor.

Manchester Orchestra returned to the studio and produced I'm Like a Virgin Losing a Child, the band's majestic, melancholy debut album from last year. It recently received national distribution, another sign of the quintet's growing acclaim.

Hull's dramatic voice is half Conor Oberst, half Roger Waters. Synth-driven atmospherics reminiscent of the Flaming Lips' Soft Bulletin accompany his glam-style declamations. It's an impressive combination, especially since Hull isn't old enough to drink.
