Mary Bridget Davies

Saturday, May 13, at Wilbert's.

When Mary Bridget Davies hit the Hanna Theatre stage as the "singing" Joplin of Randal Myler's play Love, Janis earlier this year, skeptics in the audience (read: Joplin fans old and devoted enough to have absorbed her catalog on a cellular level) held their collective breath. It took but a few notes from Davies' powerful pipes to allay their fears. The consensus was that the relative youngster had nailed it.

Those who've caught MBD and her band around town would not have been surprised. They'd know there's more to Davies than Janis-cloning (suited as she is for that purpose). Davies also brings her own tricks to the stage, including the now-and-again ability to coax jazzy nuance out of classic soul and R&B fare: a skill that could serve her well higher up the industry food chain.
