Mass Movement

When: Thu., Oct. 16 2014
Many pundits point to J.S. Bach’s compositions as the birth of modern music. Certainly, the guy had his share of admirers: Mozart, Beethoven and Chopin were all big fans. Tonight at 7:30 at Severance Hall, the Cleveland Orchestra pays tribute to the man. Along with the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus and the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Chorus, it’ll perform Bach’s Mass in B minor, a work that still sounds vibrant even though it was completed way back in 1749. An encore performance takes place on Saturday night at 8. Tickets start at $29. The Cleveland Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra Chorus (without the Youth Chorus), and four vocal soloists will give a one-hour performance of the missa brevis from the Mass tomorrow at 8 p.m. at St. John’s Cathedral in downtown Cleveland. That one is free.
