Matchbox Twenty/Goo Goo Dolls

When: Thu., Aug. 22, 7 p.m. 2013
Price: $19-$89
In 1996, Matchbox Twenty was known for acoustic guitar-driven pop songs like “3 AM” and “Push,” tunes with catchy choruses and emotionally charged vocals. However, since then, the band’s diverged from that original style. In 2002, they had the banjo-riffed hit “Unwell” but then took nine years for a new single, “How Far We’ve Come,” and another three for a full-length album. Undoubtedly, every release is a hit with massive radio play, skyrocketing this band to stardom every time. Unlike Matchbox Twenty, the Goo Goo Dolls haven’t had the same amount of commercial success but have been widely influential to other kindred ’90s-ballad bands. “Iris” and (to a lesser extent) “Name” are still popular with diehard fans. The band also has a new album, Magnetic, which features a more modern pop sound that has been redefined for the radio. Although that makes it sound like the group has sold out, this band has continually changed its sound. (Hoffman)
