Meet the DJ

5 questions for the Road Chief

Mark McGuire plays guitar in Emeralds, one of Cleveland’s best bands. But in his spare time, he digs deep for classic disco, funk, and soul cuts as DJ Road Chief. “I toured Europe, which exposed me to a lot of great records and DJ styles,” he says. “Since I’ve been back, I’ve been trying to bring that energy to the dance floor here.”

What song do you never leave home without?

“Midas Touch” by Midnight Star — a totally undeniable song. Gotta bust it every time.

What’s your guaranteed party starter?

In the summer, “Fantasy” by Mariah Carey always makes everyone go nuts. Or if people are having a hard time getting into the zone, “PYT” or “Rock With You” by Michael Jackson always breaks down those walls.

What’s your favorite song right now?

The new El DeBarge song “Lay With You” featuring Faith Evans. I’ve probably listened to it, like, 200 times in the past couple weeks. It’s so good!

Is there a song that you absolutely love that nobody else gets?

A lot of people still don’t seem to be on board with the new-jack swing ’90s R&B stuff that I play sometimes that’s a little more down-tempo. To me, “Heaven Knows” by Lalah Hathaway has a great groove and would be super fun to dance to, but people never take the bait on that one.

Name one song that defines you.

“I’m Freaky” by O’Bryan.

DJ Road Chief spins at 10 p.m. Thursday, January 27, at B-Side Liquor Lounge, 2785 Euclid Hts. Blvd., Cleveland Hts. Admission is free. Call 216-932-1966 or visit for more info.
