What sets tourmates From Autumn to Ashes and Alesana apart from other screamo groups are their pop hooks. On Holding a Wolf by the Ears, FATA rebounds from the loss of one of its singers (the screaming guy) by enlisting the drummer (who sings the melodic sections) to handle both parts. It’s a neat twist on the genre’s two-singer formula and one it nearly pulls off. Alesana’s debut CD, On Frail Wings of Vanity and Wax, is post-hardcore music with a gooey, chewy center.
