Merry & Gay

Cleveland's LGBTs make yuletide homolicious.

You won't catch Sue Doerfer lighting up the dance floor at tonight's Winter Wonderland 2007. But you can track down the human-rights activist as she schmoozes more than 200 revelers to patch together Northeast Ohio's gay community for the holidays. "I don't dance unless someone embarrasses me and drags me out there," laughs Doerfer, the director of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered Community Center of Greater Cleveland. The blowout is the agency's effort to set aside differences among Northeast Ohio's 35 "splintered" support groups, from the Human Rights Campaign and Cleveland Stonewall Democrats to People of All Colors Together and the Cleveland Pride Festival committee. To accomplish the feat, lesbi-fave DJ Freeze will control the turntables while merrymakers give the hors d'oeuvres trays and cash bar a four-hour workout. "Instead of having a bunch of Christmas parties, I thought, 'Wouldn't it be great just to have one party everyone could come to?'" says Doerfer. "This is a chance for all of us to come together and have a good time." Partying starts at 8 tonight at the Silver Grille, 200 West Prospect Avenue. Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the door.
