Mike Smith

Sunday, March 30, at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Hearty singer Mike Smith shouted that he was "Glad All Over" and happily collected "Bits and Pieces" as lead singer of the Dave Clark Five, one of the loudest, catchiest, and most polished groups of the first British Invasion. Now the low-profile throat fronts Mike Smith's Rock Engine, a quintet he assembled three years ago, and he's touring the U.S. for the first time in three decades.

Between 1964 and 1971, London's DC5 notched 17 Top 40 U.S. hits, including "Glad All Over," "Bits and Pieces," "Can't You See That She's Mine," and "Wild Weekend," the title track from a DC5 film, Having a Wild Weekend. Headed by power drummer Dave Clark, the group was nearly as popular as the Beatles (for a few weeks at least) and might have swung harder than other early British Invaders like the Kinks and the Who. The DC5 also blew away such wimpy contemporaries as Gerry & the Pacemakers and Herman's Hermits (Peter Noone, where are you?). Smith's band, also featuring Doug Lean on lead guitar, bassist Curt Sandell, drummer Paul Skelton, and saxophonist Frank Mead, winds up a two-week northeastern tour in Cleveland.
