Mom's the Word

The woman who gave you life deserves more than flowers and candy. Here are a couple of ideas.

Bouquets of carnations and handmade cards may make a few ladies giddy with pride on Mother's Day. But let us suggest a couple of things to do with dear ol' Mom once the flowers have wilted and the cards have been tucked away in her dresser drawer. For starters, mothers get in free to the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo all day long to take a tour past the exhibits of furry, feathered, and scaly mamas and their offspring. And if keeping Mom healthy is important, this morning's Y-ME National Breast Cancer Association's three-mile walk promotes awareness about the disease and the agency, which offers an information hotline and wig bank for its clients. "It's a great way to honor anybody who is a survivor, has been through it, or has been touched by it," says Darby O'Brien, the agency's special-events coordinator. "Since it's a noncompetitive walk, you can go out, get some fresh air, be together, and make a great loop around Cleveland." The zoo is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 3900 Wildlife Way. Call 216-398-5750 or visit www.clemetzoo.com. The walk starts at 9 this morning on Mall C on Lakeside Avenue. Admission is free. Visit www.y-me.org.
