You have to wonder what director Olivier Assayas really thinks of his ex-wife, actress Maggie Cheung. Just look at the role he wrote for her in Clean: Cheung plays the Yoko-like Emily, a heroin-addicted woman whose washed-up rock-star boyfriend dies of an overdose early in the film, leaving a young son and many unpaid bills. Emily spends the rest of the movie trying to repair her life, stumbling through crappy jobs, with few friends and fewer options. Her son lives with her "in-laws," including a subtle and terrific Nick Nolte, caring for both the boy and an ailing wife. Emily needs to kick her habit before she sees her kid again. Needless to say, it's not easy for this wreck of a woman.
