Executive Artistic Director Raymond Bobgan is proud to announce Neverland, a new play developed by Cleveland Public Theatre’s celebrated Student Theatre Enrichment Program (STEP) - Cleveland’s longest-running arts and job training program for urban teens. A retelling of J. M. Barrie’s classic Peter Pan, created and performed by the 2012 STEP ensemble, Neverland explores imagination, growing up and taking flight. This family-friendly show follows a group of lost youth who roam the city in search of themselves. Propelled by the power of storytelling and one brave girl, they embark on an imaginative journey confronting pirates, beguiling mermaids and their own potential for transformation. Packed with original music, dance and exciting action, Neverland is about the challenging call to find a place in the world. Neverland is the culmination of an eight week program. Working in close collaboration with CPT Teaching Artists, teenagers met for five hours per day, five days per week to develop every element of the play. Using Barrie’s writings as a starting point, CPT Teaching Artists, lead by Education Director Chris Seibert, have guided these extraordinary young people on a journey of self-discovery and awareness through the dramatic arts. During the eight weeks, students receive top-notch training from CPT Teaching Artists in theatre arts and in creative expression as well as valuable job training skills such as timeliness, following a project from beginning to end and teamwork. Come celebrate the power and creativity of Cleveland’s youth. Bring a blanket or a lawn chair and enjoy free theatre in the park! See the website for location information.
