Old School

Friendship, deception, trust and manhood are all themes you’ll find in the play Ceremonies in Dark Old Men, opening tonight at Karamu House. The “ceremonies” describe the attitudes and behaviors of two old black men living during the 1960s. During a time of social and economic inequality, these two men struggle to let go of the “ceremonies” that they face every day and that ultimately leads them to make decisions against their own moral values. Written by Lonne Elder III, the play strives to teach African-Americans to let go of the psychological chains that bind them and keep them locked into the “ceremonies” that plague them as individuals and as a community. The play opens tonight at 8. Ticket prices range from $15 to $25. (Hammond)
