When singer Olivia Newton-John had breast cancer in 1992 (she has since become an advocate for breast cancer research), she says she thought about retiring. But after recovering, she started singing again and hasn’t stopped since. “In 2000 I sang for the Olympics and I thought that was the peak of my career and nothing more would get interesting,” she says via phone during a brief interview. “But after that I was asked to sing for President Clinton and Hillary and Al Gore and it just kept going. Other things came up and it even got better. It’s been wonderful.” So wonderful, in fact, that Newton-John teamed up with John Travolta, her co-star in the hit musical Grease, for a Christmas album that just came out last month. On the disc, Newton-John and Travolta revisit Christmas classics such as “Baby It’s Cold Outside,” “Rocking Around the Christmas Tree” and “Deck the Halls” with guests such as Kenny G., Barbra Streisand and James Taylor. It’s rather schlocky stuff, but the two sound like they’re having fun singing together. “We sat with Randy Waldman, who’s an amazing piano player, and we went through tons of [Christmas songs],” says Newton-John. “We had an even bigger list before that that we cut down to include ones we had in common. Sometimes we would put some Christmas songs together. We had to see which ones suited our voices. It was an interesting journey putting it together.” Newton-John, however, says she’s not playing any Christmas tunes for this show, which will feature a selection of her biggest hits. (Jeff Niesel)
