One Under

Columbus is a hotbed for neo-hippies, serving as home base for groove- and hemp-soaked groups like jam-band kings Ekoostik Hookah, roots-groovers the Shantee, and reggae renegades the Ark Band. It was only a matter of time before the city crafted a supergroup like One Under, which draws members and styles from each of the aforementioned bands. "It's coming at you from three different directions, but it all comes together," says One Under percussionist Johnny Polansky. The group's self-titled 2005 debut dabbles in the same patchouli patchwork as Rusted Root (fusing folk, funk, blues, rock, and reggae), but without all the overindulgent noodling. "There's much more of a form and structure to our songs than the typical hippie, jammy stuff you've heard before," says Polansky. And while One Under steers clear of such instrumental excesses on record, its live gigs — which typically clock in at three hours or more — are more organic and, yes, jammy. "It's important for us as performers to make every show unique," says Polansky. "The idea is that we want people to feel like they can't miss a show."
