Opera for the Rest of Us

Broken hearts, dying wishes, and fallen women come to life in full operatic splendor at the Cleveland Institute of Music's La Traviata and Friends. "There is this legend that opera is silly," says CIM director David Bamberger. "But this is actually very fun material, with insights into the human experience. These were the Broadway musicals of the past." Tonight's production of Verdi's classic is streamlined and consolidated with scenes from Puccini and Mozart musicals. Still, expect lavish costumes, lush sets, and a full orchestra. So that audiences can easily follow the action, all the foreign words will be translated and projected on a screen. "It's like going to a foreign film," says Bamberger.
