After building up a fanbase on MySpace (back when that was still a legitimate path to success), Owl City (aka Adam Young) signed to a major label and went on to release the single “Fireflies,” a song which swept the country — nay, the world — by storm and sold about a bazillion copies. The Minnesota-native kept recording after that, but perhaps the unprecedented success of that single also managed to cast a shadow of high expectation over his work after it. But he has no intention of becoming a one-hit wonder and released his fourth full-length album, The Midsummer Station, just last year. The majority of the album follows the EDM trend with dance-pop, electro-house and dubstep songs that are clear attempts by Young to make it onto some nightclub playlists. Most of the songs are built with catchy choruses (key example being “Good Time,” the single with Carly Rae Jepsen). Songs like “Embers” and “Dementia,” which features Blink-182 frontman Mark Hoppus, provide a break in the EDM action. While the show will be a balance of energetic dancing and lighter-waving (or cellphone-waving), every song will demand sing-alongs, so make sure to study up on the choruses. (Sam Mendez)
