Let your imagination run wild today at Parade the Circle, one of Cleveland’s surest signs of summer. Beginning at noon, a non-stop lineup of giant puppets, stilt-walkers, imaginative floats, colorful costumed characters, and more will step off from the Cleveland Museum of Art and parade around Wade Oval in a clockwise direction. It doesn’t end until every last one of them has been ogled by the appreciative crowd. (Hint: come early to grab a good viewing space, and bring your own blanket or chair.) Before and after the parade, check out Circle Village’s tents and booths where more than 30 schools, churches, museums, community organizations, and food vendors are represented. Among the activities: Design a paper-plate mask with the Cleveland Art Museum or create your own artistic family tree with the Cleveland Botanical Garden staff. The free event is presented by University Circle Inc. Cleveland Museum of Art’s Robin VanLear founded the parade in 1990 and has served as its artistic director ever since. “It makes people smile and be happy to be in Cleveland,” she says of the summer staple’s longevity. “It makes them want to go home and create something, or sing, or dance.” Once the parade is over, you can hop on Lolly the Trolley for a free round-trip ride to the Gordon Square Art District, where the party continues (read on to learn more).
