Petal is the kind of artist you stumble upon on Spotify and immediately add to all your latest playlists. The Pennsylvania native possesses the old-school elegance of Lily Allen or Lana Del Rey’s vocals but also the too-cool-for-you rock star charm of Speedy Ortiz’s lead singer, Sadie Dupuis. Petal’s new album, “Magic Gone,” has many highlights. “Stardust,” is a lyrical masterpiece that boasts her classically trained vocals. While her perfectly controlled voice has a real power to it, her words show she’s just as unsure as the rest of us. “Now we’re living in shitty apartments with mismatched dishes, unlike our parents/Maybe we’d make good parents?/Maybe not, I can’t say/I can’t say I didn’t love you,” she sings. “Tightrope” is a light-weight tune with more focus on the catchy instrumentals. Petal rounds out the trifecta with “Better Than You” and ditches her indie roots for a straight up rock ’n’ roll vibe. (Halle Weber)
