Plasma for Guns

Plasma for Guns professes to deliver a stripped-down approach that cuts to the core, but the trio's artsy post-punk and indie rock is too imaginative for a style that conjures images of recycled garage schlock.

Maximizing the group's streamlined aesthetic, Youngblood features clanging guitars and propulsive drumming, producing danceable two-minute tracks that could become college-radio gold. What could be seen as slop (wrong notes, unkept time, out-of-tune guitars) translates into immediacy on this promising live EP.

Agitated tracks like "We Put the Fidel in Lo-Fidelity" burst with Fugazi-like guitars that enter with a shimmer and exit in a haze of hissing feedback. "Maiden France" and "Menage a Huh" showcase the band's penchant for penning melodic indie rock. The only misstep is "Mazel Tov Cocktail," where frontwoman Rachel Hart adopts an excruciating hipster accent.
