Pooch Hooch

North Ridgeville author toasts her pet in new book.

Shadow has reason to cheer these days. Now that a book of poetry about the nine-year-old lab mix is in stores, owner Holly McCain gives her a bowl of Happy Tail Ale after every book-signing. "I call it puppy beer," says McCain, who's published Brown Eyes in Shadow's honor. "It's nonalcoholic. But when dogs drink it, I've seen them start to fight. It's like watching humans in a bar brawl."In her book, McCain pays tribute to the canine world for its devotion to humans. People, she says, can learn a few lessons from their furry friends too. "When you're young, you're in such a hurry to go through life that you don't look at the world like you did as a child. Animals make me look at everything I took for granted," says McCain. "Every day I've had pets, they've made me slow down to stop and smell the flowers." McCain reads and signs her book from 2 to 5 today at Studio of 5 Rings, 20160 Center Ridge Road in Rocky River.
