Presidents of the United States of America/In the Whale
When: Tue., Aug. 12, 8 p.m. 2014
When the Cleveland Browns opened up their 2013 season at home against the Miami Dolphins, the Presidents of the United States of America (famous in this corner of the world for “Cleveland Rock!”) performed at halftime. It was awesome. In fact, their brief set, which included the almighty “Peaches,” was the sole highlight of the entire day (save for your buddy Al puking over the upper-deck rail). That’s because PUSA is an iconic 90s alt-rock band -- one that cemented its reputation with goofball anthems and frequent trips to the finely crafted metaphor bin. Despite the 90s attachment, the band is still kicking it strong. They dropped Kudos to You! back in February, which provides more of the basitar- and guitbass-laden indie tunes you know you love. Check out “Poor Little Me” for a nice example. After all these years, though, it’s the band’s first two albums that remain must-hear experiences. Crank up “Ladies and Gentleman Part 1” from II and prepare yourself to rock. (Sandy)
