Prodigy Pianist

When: Thu., Jan. 23 2014
In the classical tradition, composers were commonly virtuosos: Debussy famously sight-read Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring; Beethoven often performed his own concertos; Mozart would perform while conducting. Reinvigorating the lost practice, the Cleveland Institute of Music's Mixon Hall Masters Series: Return of the Virtuoso Composer breathes life into the presence of dually-capable musicians. Tonight's performance features Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Montero. The prodigy performed her first concerto with an orchestra when she was only 8. Today, alongside performing the common Schumann and Brahms repertoire, Montero incorporates improvisation into her performances. Calling upon the audience for a musical suggestion, she unleashes stunning improvised sessions. Tonight's unique performance starts at 8 at Cleveland Institute of Music's Mixon Hall. Tickets are $28 and $14 for students with valid ID. (Stoops)
